The Great Quilt Giveaway!

Quilts quilts and more quilts.  Just how many does one person need? There’s only so much wall space for wallhangings, even if you switch them around seasonally, and only so many quilts will fit on a bed – even during a frigid Wisconsin winter.  And, even more importantly, there are new quilts always wanting to be made so in order to make room for new ones, I treated my family to The Great Quilt Giveaway last weekend. 🙂

I picked a bunch of them that I was willing to part with from large lap quilt to various sized wallhangings, packed them all up, and when my niece came to pick me up her eyes lit up when I told her what we were going to do with them.  We spread them all out on the lawn, chasing a few down from time to time since it was rather breezy…

Then I put numbers in a hat and everyone drew one to find out what order they got to chose their quilt in.  There were only two rules:  (1) Mothers could not influence their children in the choice of quilt they made.   This rule specifically made for my sister and sister-in law who would have been more than willing to let their kids know which ones they liked and thought the kids should pick. 🙂  and (2) no whining if someone who got to chose before you picked the one you had your eye on.

There were a few moans as someone chose the quilt someone else was hoping for but no whining.  And I think everyone was very happy with what they got to take home.  Here’s a few photos of the chosen quilts with their new owners.

Of course once we were finished, they all wanted to know if there was going to be  an ANNUAL great quilt give away.  I told them, it all depended on how long and cold (and productive I was) next winter! 🙂

  2. Great idea….wish I was part of your family (joke!). Actually I have too many quilts of my own. Maybe one day I’ll use your idea of a quilt give-away. Greetings from South Africa where we are enjoying Spring at long last.

  3. how wonderful you have photos of the great givewawy! love it!! When my quilting grandmother, “Momma Newt” died in 1995 she had written on the back of her copy of her will – for all of us to rip paper into pieces and number them – then put in a hat and draw a number before going upstairs…. in the guest bedroom closet she had a stack of quilts that had paper numbers PINNED to them – and that would be our last quilt from her. what a special day that was!

she had been planning this for a few years as you can imagine – and there were 18 of us grandchildren with over two dozen greats – but only the 18 grands got a final quilt…. and actually she had 9 of them done the summer before and when we had our reunion and everyone was home for the 4th of July (((yes all of us had a hayride float in the parade, and we got to where she was standing on the street we all stood up and cheered – WE LOVE YOU MOMMA NEWT!!))) she asked her daughters if they would mind if she had a drawing for the 9 that were completed since just so happened that 9 of the 18 were from out of state…. and no one opposed. so those cousins from NC, MS & LA got theirs the last time they were home and got to give her that special Thank you kiss and hug. 😉

your family is so lucky that you gave them such special gifts!

    Love from Texas! ~bonnie
