2011 – Granny’s Hankie

Please read all the information below – it should answer many of your questions.

Granny’s Hankie is the 2011 BOM I will be posting to the blog.  It reminds me of those pretty hankies our grandmothers had.  This is a big quilt – 102″ square.  The appliqued blocks are also large – 16″ square finished – so most of the applique pieces are fairly large.

The second Saturday of each month, a new block will be posted.  When a new block is posted, the previous months will no longer be available.  This BOM will start in January and end December.  All instructions/blocks will be available for pdf download through a link on the bottom of this page.

Each applique block will print out full size (using 4 to 6 sheets of paper) for you to tape together to use for tracing your templates.  There will also be a larger colored image of each block each month for your reference.  As with all applique, you start stitching with the pieces farthest in the background and working your way to the top most piece.  The colored image will help you with numbering the pieces in the order you  wish to add them (they will not be prenumbered).

Please respect copyright. Asking for others to email you previous patterns is a violation of copyright. If you wish to direct others to this pattern, please provide a link to this page so the recipient can print their own personal copy of the pattern.  It should not be used or distributed in any other manner.

Again, once a new block is available, the prior month’s block is taken down.  Please do not ask for blocks you may have missed to be emailed to you – that will not happen.  Once it’s gone, it’s gone.  If a new block is not posted on the date it should be, please be patient.  It just means life has gotten hectic and it will get posted as soon as I have time – usually within  a day or two (once someone reminds me I’ve forgotten). :-)

I love sharing my desings and do so for free.  It takes a good amount of my time to do so (in addition to my full time job, some designing work for Hoffman Fabrics, and generally just having a life), time which I’m willing to give/share.  But you need to be responsible for obtaining the file download timely before files are removed if you wish to participate.  Under no circumstance will blocks you missed be emailed after the fact – there’s always many who ask even tho it is clearly stated in the project information that it will not happen.

If you have any questions, please email me or post a comment.  A few other color variations are pictured below.

The final installment!!!!!! Get it HERE!

This installment will stay up until the 2nd weekend in January and then be removed.

Updated 11/25/11 — if you get a “file not found error” please keep trying.  That is a wordpress error message I cannot do anything about.  Others have gotten this error message and when they’ve gone back later, been able to download the file.  It’s slow to download for me but I’m on dial up and every time I’ve gone back to test the link due to multiple emails I’m receiving regarding the error, it opens just fine.  If you are trying to open it, try saving it to your computer first without opening it. The pattern has been downloaded hundreds of times already so I know it is working.  I do not email patterns out individually so please don’t ask.

Denise

I still can’t download November’s block with the trouble with Word Press the month of November. s I tried several attempts and now it is the only block I don’t have :o ( Elizabeth

      • justquiltin

I’m sorry you weren’t able to get it. It was downloaded literally hundreds of times but I have no control over wordpress or it’s interactions with other people’s computers and I haven’t been able to find a better way to make it available.

  2. Wonderful feeling to that quilt. I look forward to it, thank you. I’ve put you on my sidebar links for others to find, too, and am blogging about it right now.

  3. Randi

Wow…love the concept…and excited about doing this with you. Thanks so much!

  4. carol

Problems have been in our family for the past year and I haven’t even had time to read emails. I am excited to start this BOM. Thank you so very much, Denise.

  5. waouh!!! Thanks a lot for this bom.
    Blessings from France

  6. Kim

Very pretty. I like the red/white version best.

  7. Marilyn

They’re both great! Hmmmm–maybe I need to do this one!

  8. When I was a little girl my late mom always carried hankies that she bought in the five and dime. As she got older she switched to tissues that she stuck in the sleeve of her sweater. She never understood why the cuff of the right sleeve on all of her sweaters were stretched out.
This pattern brings back some sweet memories. Thank you Denise.

  9. Kathy

I love it! I have some of my grandmother’s hankies, so this will be a special quilt to work on. I’ll have to save the directions for later as my son is getting married in June and my daughter in Jan 2012!
Is it possible to make a pdf for the intro with the picture and the yardage etc? That would be very helpful!
    thank you!

    • justquiltin

The pdf photo and yardage will be coming when the first month’s block is posted.

  10. Cheryl Ashmore

Your pattern looks quite remarkable!! I love applique so it should be a perfect fit…..thanks!!

  11. Ruthie Peterburg

Thank you Denise, love the pattern and look forward to seeing the blocks.
    Warm hugs,
    Ruthie

    • Lindy

      @Ruthie P.
Did you by any chance, decades ago, do a 5″ fabric squares exchange through the mail, with a facilitator by the name of Melinda “Lindy” Galbraith? When I saw your name today my brain told me, “I know her!”.

  12. Evelyne

Merci pour ce B.O.M. très joli

  13. Jean Froelich

If possible, please send me an email when the new block is posted. Thank you.
    Jean

    • justquiltin

Sorry Jean – it’s not possible to email everyone once a new block is posted – I’d be spending all my time keeping track of who to email and when to email. They will be posted the same Saturday of each month as listed on the main BOM page so if you have a calendar system on your computer you may want to make a reminder each month to get the new pattern.

  14. Joanne Maner

WOW Denise. I absolutely love the red version. It would make a stunning Christmas quilt. Another quilt to my “Have to make” list. Boy is that list growing.

  15. virginia anderson

Wow this is a wonderful quilt. thanks for sharing

  16. Jan

Wow! I stumbled on this site and am blown away at the beauty of this line. I’ve wanted to make a quilt with my mom’s hankies for a long time. This is so inspiring!! Thank you and looking forward to the first block.

  24. justquiltin

Thanks ladies for all the kind comments. I hope you’ll enjoy making it.

  25. Mjmcpherson

Thanh you for sharing your quilt design.

  26. Viv

I love all the variations but since blue and yellow is my favorite combination then I’ll have to pick it… I’m thinking thought that I’d like to use yellow as my main color with blue and white…. since I lean toward yellow more…

  27. Cheryl

Thank you for sharing! Where do I download the files? I can’t wait to start!
    Thank you

    • justquiltin

weekend it starts is 2nd saturday as listed on the main page

    • Janett

Does anyone have the January 2011 info? I located this too late and will be missing a block.

      THX!

      • justquiltin

Janett – once blocks are removed they are no longer available and asking someone else to email them is a violation of my copyright. One option is to find another applique block from another source that you can make the same size block out of to fit in the space for the one you missed.

  28. Judy Morin

Tougt deciding on colorway. Bue/yellow to match my bedroom, brighter colors ’cause DH likes them, greens light or dark – because I like them – decisions – decisions!

    • This is so pretty make 2LOL. I am considering another one.The blocks are big so therefore so are the pieces. This would make a wonderful wedding quilt.Anyone getting married?? LOL

  29. Lisbeth

    It’s beautiful. I love it.

  30. Deb

What an awesome design. Looking forward to each installment!

  31. What a beautiful BOM you are offering. I just LOVE the blue and white version and may just have to do those color ways. Thank you for offering such a lovely quilt to work on throughout the year. Can’t wait for the first PDF to be posted so that I can save it to my computer to work on when I’ve recovered from my arm surgery.

Thanks again. I’m bookmarking this so I don’t lose it. The only thing I didn’t see was which Saturday of the month you’ll be posting. ~2~

    Thanks again.

Terri at the Drake’s Nest in Ossineke, Michigan

  32. I am in love with the blue version! Looking forward to following along! Thanks for your efforts…Kathy

  33. Rose

beautiful work – great inspiration – thanks for sharing

  34. Gerda Vantuil

Oh, my, Denise! You just HAD to publish a picture in my all time favourite colour combo!! LOL Red and white, with green!!! I LOVE IT!!! :)
Thanks so much for your generosity and time. I’m going to try to make these, though it may take me longer than this year. Needleturn applique takes longer, but it so much prettier.
    Gerda in Alberta, Canada

    • justquiltin

Gerda – pleased you’ll be joining in. Needleturn is my favorite.

  35. Kathy DeMarco

wow, love this quilt! just completed a local quilt shop’s applique class…think I can do most of this from my stash…so would love to join in…it is so generous of you to share your design talent!

  36. Rejeanne Santoro

Beautiful! I hope that a reminder is sent when the new block is posted. I really don’t want to miss out on this. My favorite is the last one – dark background. Is saving the blocks in EQ an option?

  37. Maureen

    Denise
I love the design, thank you once again for sharing you talent.
I have chosen to make it in Blues and Pinks.
Happy New Year may it be filled with love and lots of shared laughter.
    Take care
    Maureen

    • justquiltin

I’m sure blues and pinks will be lovely – you always have such great color combinations in your quilts.

  38. Marilyn Sunderman

This one is a keeper. Thanks!

  39. I’ve never done needle turn applique. I think that I might just start with these. Probably not right at first though. I will see.

  40. denise fells

    lOve this quilt

  41. Very beautifull pattern. Thank you very much for this sharing.

  42. Thanks for adding a link for the cover file. And don’t stress out about the 2nd Saturday thingee…all will work out. Folks are too busy to really read things these days it seems…

Love the quilt design. Well, I love the center blocks. I really like the borders…but they remind me of those houses you play Monopoly with…and that game stresses me out! So, I’ll probably do different borders. To each their own, right?

You make me want to drag out my EQ6 manuals and get to designing myself!

Big Hugs! Thanks for doing this BOM…even if we are a little demanding and just slow at times! Love your blog too BTW!!

    Kathy

  43. Diane

This is great! Definitely on my to do list!! Thanks so much!!

  44. Joanne Maner

ROFL…. Just read your blog. You made my day. I thought I was the only one that seems to be constantly repeating myself. Glad I am not alone.
The BOM this year is beautiful and I love Percy. Time to go shopping. Woohoo!!!!
Thank you for all your hard work. I too have all versions of EQ but not very good at using them yet. Gotta do something about that.
I am amazed at all you get done and working too. I am retired and don’t seem to accomplish much. The #1 procrastinator hehehe.

    • justquiltin

Glad to make your day. LOL Have fun shopping. It’s probably easier to get more done when you don’t have lots of time on your hands. I don’t want to waste any of those hours when I actually get to sew. :-) Having two weeks off left me loads of time to sew and play with EQ. But now I’m back to mostly just sewing my weekends away.

  45. Kathie in NC

    Lovely!! Thanks for the pattern!

  46. Nancy D

Love this BOM. I still have my Grandmothers hankies

    • justquiltin

Thanks Nancy – I don’t have any of my Granny’s hankies but remember them well – always one in her apron pocket. She was never without that apron on unless she was leaving the house.

  47. Olga Moen

Please forgive my ignorance. I am new to quilting and to EQ7, have not even used the software and this is the first newsletter I’ve received. What does BOM mean and where would I go to download the pattern for these lovely blocks?

    • justquiltin

Olga – BOM stands for Block of the Month. Each month a new block will be posted with the pattern on how to make it. There will be a link on the Granny’s Hankie page starting the later in the month for you to get the first block’s pattern. Play with your EQ – it’s loads of fun! :-)

      • Olga Moen

BOM = Block of the Month. Ohhh and dah! That makes perfect sense. I’ve had my EQ7 for a few months now. I purchased it after having gone for the first time ever to the Northwest Quilt Expo. I jumped in and bought lots of quilting tools but haven’t yet put them to much use. I made one baby quilt from a kit (flannel fabric) that I purchased at Fabric Dept. It turned out really cute but I don’t dare ask the baby’s mom whether or not she’s wash it and if it has shrunk to the size of a hankie. I know that when I sew clothing I always preshrink the fabric and I struggled with whether or not I should shrink the kit fabric. Well, I decided not to because I didn’t know if there would be enough to make the quilt because I know that flannel shrinks considerably. Oh well. Needless to say, piecing together a quilt even a very simple one is much more difficult than making a dress out of a Vogue Pattern, but I look forward to the challenge. Thanks again for clearing up of BOM thing for me.

      • Nancy Wilkinson

A couple of tips for you, Olga…While lots of quilters no longer wash their cotton quilting fabrics before using them in a quilt, if you are using flannels, that option isn’t open to you. Because flannel shrinks so much, you do need to pre-shrink your flannel fabric, along with any other fabric you are using in the same quilt. This saves surprises later on! Also…if you are new to quilting, the best thing you can do is to make a friend of your local quilt shop. They will offer so many classes to you that will be fun and informative so that you can avoid some of the major potholes on your quilting journey. Enjoy the scenery!

      • justquiltin

I generally preshrink flannel but not if it’s a kit because you likely won’t have enough fabric. But then I like how the quilt turns out – flannel top and backing and cotton batting – so the front and back don’t shrink differently. I love it when they turn out all snuggly and shrunk and ready to cuddle under from the dryer.

  48. WOW! I don’t usually do BOM’s (actually never done one) and I’m not a huge fan of applique….but I LOVE this. REALLY love this one. I saw a Baltimore Bliss that I fell in love with and your blue and white reminds me a LOT of it…so alas, I am about to embark on my very first BOM. :) This is a stretch for me…I’m a modern quilter to the core, but it’s time for a change!

    • justquiltin

Glad you like it. I never used to be fan of applique but have totally fallen in love with it.

  49. Rose

    I love this beautiful quilt

  50. Linda

The quilt is beautiful, you are so good to share it with us all. I too am amazed at everything you are getting done and working too. I shall try and remember to download the pages every month and I promise not to bother you if I forget. Try and let the peeves wash over you, I know it is dificult but it is better for you it you can. Big Hugs and thanks again for the BOM.

  51. karen Seckold

Love this BOM, thank you so much for sharing it with us.

    karen

  52. Wow!! You never cease to amaze me. This pattern is definitely a keeper and I think I may be doing all the color and may work up more color combinations later. This is definitely a classic!!! Thanks a million!!!

  53. anxious to get started on this lovely quilt. It’s the second saturday of January and I can’t seem to find the lastest posting for the quilt. Is it up yet

    • justquiltin

Patience is a virtue :-) It gets posted when I get a chance sometime on the Second Saturday – not by a specific time. Depends on when I fit it into my busy day.

  54. Alicia

Thank you for adding the link to retrieve the pattern. The quilt is wonderful and I am anxious to begin…

  55. Geri

This is a lovely quilt. thank you so much for your generosity. I just finished purchasing the fabric to make this beaut. They are all wonderful but that red one is just calling my name. I had a hard time picking out the pink as I buy my fabrics online. I will have 2 choices when everything arrives. I am excited to see these blocks.
    Geiri

    • justquiltin

Hope your fabrics arrive quickly – I’m always so impatient when I order on line – and hope you enjoy making it.

  56. Lisa

Thank you for the nice bom. Lisa from Sweden

  57. Birdie

Thank you for this wonderful design BOM. I am anxious to try it in the black and green version. I love the look of hand applique and I want to try the back-basting technique on this. Also, I thank you for the nice presentation of the whole project. Easy to follow, easy to understand. Sew fun. :-)

    • justquiltin

Thanks Birdie. I think it will be really pretty with the black background.

  58. Judi

Just downloaded the first block and can’t wait to start. Thank you so much for this gorgeous project.

  60. KellieV

Amazing quilt – would love to be part of this BOM!

    • justquiltin

Glad to have you join. Make sure to come back each month to get the blocks.

  61. Peggy Dawson

I truly love this quilt. In fact I’m seriously considering doing it in more than one colorway. I was wondering, since I haven’t purchased my fabrics yet, if it would be possible for you to show us what fabrics you have chosen for your own quilt? It might help some of us out with our own choices. Thank you for your generosity of sharing your talents of designing and understanding EQ7. I have EQ6 and don’t quite get some of it. I just need more practice but that would take away from my sewing time. Ha Ha

    • justquiltin

Peggy – I’m going mine similar to the red and white version that’s shown. I don’t have a specific plan. For the first block I just pulled from the stash which is what I plan to do until I get to a point where I need to buy more reds.

  62. Vanessa Spencer

Hi this looks good when I downloaded block it said it was the final block, did I miss the rest. Regards Vanessa fromOZ

    • justquiltin

If you look at the pattern, you’ll see you’ve got the whole thing. The “final” really only means something to me in the process of getting the pattern ready. First there’s the writing of the text and then all those applique pages have to be created as separate files, then everything gets combined into one pdf file for download, so the “final” only means it’s my copy of everything all pulled into one file. :-)

  63. Joanne Maner

I went out yesterday and bought the background and border fabric. Took me awhile to find the two fabrics i liked together but finally it came together. I think i will pull from my stash the reds for the blocks. Don’t think i have many reds but when i start looking i might surprise myself.
I have never done hand applique so this will be my first venture. Please wish me luck.
What method do you use Denise?

    • justquiltin

Joanne – My most favorite method is freezer paper needle turn. I trace the pattern pieces on freezer paper and then press it to the back of my fabrics (the waxy side temporarily adheres to the fabric. Cut them out adding the seam allowance to the edge as you cut them. And then needle turn them in place. The freezer paper gives you a nice edge to needle turn against so I get nice smooth shapes. I use a skinny knitting needle to slide in between freezer paper and the fabric it’s “stuck” to loosen it and pull it out before the piece is stitched fully closed. Or you can trim away the background fabric from beneath your applique and remove it.

      • Joanne Maner

Thanks Denise for the great instructions. I am using freezer paper but hadn’t decided whether i want to glue/press the fabric around the freezer paper. Needle turn makes me nervous hehehe. Although in the reverse applique workshop i took we did needle turn and i had no problem. This may be a sampler of all the different applique methods by the time it is done. That way i can find the best way for “Me”.

      • justquiltin

Joanne – I did try the glue the fabric to the back method on one project (using glue stick) but didn’t like how much I had to wet the block in order to get the glue to release. Course that could have been partly due to the fact that the blocks sat for a while before I took the paper out.

  64. Thank you for this B.O.M. also Denise, will be looking forward to seeing the rest of them.
    Elaine

  65. Geri

I noticed some of you are still looking for fabric. I came across this collection this morning and thought how perfect it would be . It’s called Return to Romance It would be mine if I didn’t already have my fabric for this project. :o ) I aploogize if we are not allowed to post websites here

  69. Diana Fink

    Beautiful, Love it.

  70. Carol

Love the bom. Can you please tell me how to square up the block without taking to much off the top and bottom. Thanks for your time and for sharing.
    Carol

    • justquiltin

Carol – I have a 16.5″ square ruler so that makes it easy to square it up – just center and trim around the ruler. It’s my favorite ruler since you can cut so many different sizes with it. You could press your finished blocks in quarters, folding the design so it sort of matches up to make sure it’s centered and then if you have a 9.5″ square ruler or larger, line up the 8.25″ line with the center point to trim each quarter. Or press quarter line and on the back side draw the 16.5″ outer edge so you can make sure its even all the way around.

  71. Thank you! It’s beautiful this BOM

  72. Lisa

  74. Thank you for this quilting project. I have many of my mother’s and grandmother’s handkerchiefs from the 1930′s on. They have been taking space (not begrudged one bit) but a quilt would be much nicer. Cordially, Nehmah

  78. Thanks for the lovely BOM. I love applique. This is certainly pretty. Not to difficult either Thanks so much Debbie

    • justquiltin

Thanks Debbie. Most of the pieces are a fairly easy size to handle which makes it go more quickly.

  79. I loved making the January block and I am looking forward to the next one. Thank-you so much for doing this!♥

  84. sunshine

What an amazing setting to use the new repro hankies that I’ve been collecting! Not sure if the size will be the same but with EQ that’s not a problem ! ! ! ! Thanks…

sunshine – from the Northwoods of Wisconsin

    • justquiltin

That would be a great idea to actually use the hankies in the middle of the blocks.

  85. Linda

Wonderful BOM! You have a great color sense and your design sense is just as good! Thanks for your all your work on this – and for offering it to you!

  86. This is beautiful. I would love to give it a try. Might be a month or two before I can begin, but hopefully sooner. : )

  87. Love your quilt. You must have loads more time than I!

    • justquiltin

Well if you have a family to take care of then I probably do have more time. :-) I only have to answer to me. But I’m gone every day from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. so most of my sewing time is on the weekends. Who needs hours of sleep – I’ve got sewign to do instead. VBG

  88. Running

Thank you for the lovely quilt. Can’t wait to share with my quilting friends. We get to gether for a sew day so this would be diffiently a quilt we can do. Great work and thank you for sharing your time and telents.

  89. sandra collins

thanks you for sharing your ideas. It is a lovely quilt.

  90. Rita

Beautiful BOM! It’s really inspirational to have such a variety of quilts, all in different colors, shown here. Printed off Jan block and will now pick some colors. Thanks for sharing with us!

A friend sent me this link and I am thrilled she did. I love this pattern and especially the red and white. Looking forward to making this quilt. Thanks

  92. skydiver70

I read the rules and the January pattern is no longer available. But would someone be allowed to email the Jan. BOM to me? I would love to make this one, but didn’t find it until tonight.

    • justquiltin

NO, sharing of the pattern is a violation of copyright. If you want to make the pattern, I suggesting finding a floral applique block at another source or drawing your own and just make it to fit the finished size block to fill in for the one missed.

      • skydiver70

Thanks for your reply. I understand now. Sorry I didn’t realize that. I knew it was posted any longer, but didn’t know it was illegal. Thanks for letting me know. I will look for another floral applique block that is free.

      • justquiltin

You could always wait to fill in the missing block last and use different bits from the other blocks to combine to make a different style block too. I’m sure ou’ll find something to use in it’s place.

  93. Vanessa Spencer

Ta for the February Block don’t know when I can start it but love it thanks Ness

  94. alicia

Me encanta este maravilloso edredon y ya voy a empezarlo. Creo qie sera el de fondo amarillo y azules porque combina bien con mi dormitorio. Es precioso gracias por compartir. Un saludo desde España

  95. Lotta

jag har missat första blocket. Tycker den är jättefin.

  96. Linda

    Denise,

Thank you for the beautiful quilt pattern. I appreciate all your hard work and know what’s it’s like to work 2 jobs at once!! God bless you for your generousity! You are truly gifted!

    Linda

  97. Roseanne Rosenblum

can someone tell me the name of the January block, I know I downloaded it and will have to run a search to find it.

    • justquiltin

Roseanne – if you didn’t rename it when you saved it, it would be called January – final.pdf. If you search your computer for all files with a .pdf extension, it should be found no matter what file, etc. you may have saved it to.

  98. I am having difficulty getting the february block to download…. any other suggestions other than the not you have just put up would be great. I know you have been away from your computer for a bit.

  99. Dell Kelly

    love the quilt pattern.

  100. Dell Kelly

sorry i missed the january block, but anyway will be making this one, once my broken arm gets better.
    thank you for the block

    • justquiltin

Hope your arm heals quickly so you can get back to quilting! I’m sure you’ll find something to put in that missing space.

  101. Bonnie Lamberth

    Love this block of month

    • justquiltin

Thanks Bonnie. I’ve gotten waylaid with other projects and need to get my fabrics pulled and get sewing on the February block. :-)

  102. Charlotte

    Thank you

  103. I have managed the download – thankfully …. I must have done something incorectly – all OK now :)

  104. Marilyn Palmer

Am anxious to try your blocks, sorry I didn’t know about this until now.

  105. Sara

Where are the instructions and months available???

  106. Pam Spencer

I have just found your site and love the “Granny’s Hankies” BOM that you are doing.

I have missed the first , January, block. Is there anyway I can receive a copy?

    Thanks Regards Pam

    • justquiltin

Sorry Pam – as it states on the Granny’s Hankie page – once a block is taken down is is no longer available.

  107. Hi Denise,
I am curious as to whether there is a flickr group set up for us to share pictures of our finished blocks. Not that I have a finished block yet mind you.

This is my very first needle turn applique quilt and I’m a little slow yet, but I would love to see other people’s quilt blocks and be inspired by them.

    • justquiltin

No Jeanette – no Flickr. Photos can be emailed to me to load to the page that contains blocks made by blog readers – link is in the sidebar.

  108. Debbie

Just found your site, Fabulous!!!. I missed Janurary , so will start with Feburary. All your color schemes are beautiful and inspiring to do more than one. Will look forward to the up coming blocks. Thank you for your designs and time.

  109. Thanks so much for your beautiful Grannie’s Hankie BOM! I”ve been searching for ‘just the right hand appliqued quilt’ to boost my spirits after a soul-shattering year of family deceits and betrayals after the death of my Mother in August. Some quiet time with lovely fabrics, needle & thread, and a good MP3 book are just what I need! Thanks, too, for your lovely color suggestions. But, after making a “Mama Loved Red” quilt for Mother, in red/ white and black, I think I’ll use your ‘choice’ of red & white – since I have such a good collection of these colors now! Thanks again.

  110. Lesley Dopson

Hi Denise thankyou so much for a wonderful quilt it is just stunning. I went into download the March block and it only comes up with adds from media fire I think something is wrong and thought I should let you know. Thankyou once again Lesley

    • justquiltin

It was saved on media fire. It takes a little longer for their download button to come up.

  111. Christine

A friend found this site for me in early January. I went to my LQS and had the owner help me pick out fabrics for the entire 12 blocks. They are all in baggies (little snippets of a piece of fabric in the baggies that use fabrics also used in other blocks). So I was all organized and ready to go.

Finished the first two and am loving it!
Just printed out block 3 and can’t wait to start.

  112. Why Mediafire? what happened to wordpress? Mediafire wants us to sign up. NOT!

    • justquiltin

WordPress is where my blog is not where the files are stored. Boxnet wasn’t working so I had to save it to a different file sharing service. You do not need to sign up with mediafire to access the file.

  113. Lesley Dopson

Hi Joyce yes I agree wordpress was heaps better I am sure it is just a glich and Denise will sort it out Lesley

  114. skydiver

I love the March Block. I am not as experienced as some others so I have a question. Would a fat quarter in each color be enough for this block? If so, where could I find the color shown in the March block?

    • justquiltin

Yes – if you downloaded the cover page/general instructions – that talks about the abiity to use fat quarters. As for the color in the March block – those are just fabric images from EQ so the chances of being able to find it anywhere are probably slim. It says its Secret Santa by Lori Seibert so you may be able to search that on line and find a shop that has it.

      • justquiltin

The darkest pink fabric is the Secret Santa

  115. Susan Torrens

Thanks for the lovely pattern and all the hard work. I had no trouble downloading it, and it arrived in my computer quickly. I’m looking forward to starting the project when I return home to my stash. (I’m in Florida, doing the snowbird thing)

  116. Joanne Maner

Denise as I have mentioned before I am also on dial-up. yuck!!! Just wanted you to know that even with my slower than slow speed I had no trouble d/l the March pattern.
Whatever download server you need to use, go for it. They all work about the same and if people are having trouble figuring it out they can always “Google” for an answer.
Almost finished Feb block so soon i can start on march.
Also found my border fabric for the Poinsettia pattern. I am making an autumn one in gold and brown color scheme. The fabric i found at the quilt show was perfect.
Thanks again for the patterns and don’t let a few people get to you. 1500 d/l, obviously someone is happy and able to get the pattern no problem ;)

  117. Kim Q

Thanks so much! No problem downloading at all, in fact, this download site is easier than most. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful pattern.

  118. Evita Piepho

I missed the February block. Any way of getting it?
Please let me know if I can buy it also.
Thanks in advance for your reply. Evita

    • justquiltin

As stated on the BOM page, once it’s gone you can no longer obtain it.

  119. Mary Beth Ticknor

    Beautiful quilt.

  120. Mary Beth Ticknor

I just found you and your beautiful quilts. I downloaded the March block but of course missed the first ones because I didn’t know about your site. Where can I obtain the first blocks?

    • justquiltin

As stated on the BOM page and the general instructions – they are no longer available.

  121. Thank you so much for making these blocks available.

    Big Hug

    Cheers
    Anna

  122. LeslieC

Denise, First, I’m really enjoying this project! Thanks for doing this. My situation: I have downloaded the first three months (all so beautiful), completed the applique for January (love it!) and just realized as I started to prepare Feb to cut my fabrics, that the outer border of each ‘assembled’ PDF pattern as I printed it, measures about 15″, not 16 as I expected. Is there a printer setting that I should have been aware of for printing this? I’ll have to adjust later, but I marked the corners on the Jan block, and I don’t think I’ll be able to get the marks out(!) I’ve never downloaded any patterns before, so I’m unfamiliar with various settings. Thanks for your help.

    • justquiltin

You should make sure that there is no “page scaling” or “fit to page” turned on – those will make it print smaller than it is supposed to be.

    • try soap and water to the marking it will usually take the markingout. I use a #2soft lead pencil very lightly and it usually comes out. You can aalso use a soft gum eraser. Dana in

  123. jojo

trop beau j aime beaucoup les couleurs bisesjojo

  124. Very pretty…ty

  125. Nancy

Love the pattern, I just found this opportunity and downloaded March…yea!! Is there anyway that the other blocks that I have missed might be available again? Great job on the creative pattern!

    • justquiltin

No, as the information on the project states, once they are removed and a new block posted, the old ones are no longer available.

  126. ada shiela clarke

This is first newsletter I have received from you, apart from offers of sale items, so was not aware of the BOM, now I have March and notice from other comments that you cannot email first 2 blocks, this is a shame, because I would have liked to have them.

    • justquiltin

Not sure what you mean about first newsletter you received, apart from offcers of sale items. If you subscribe to my blog – you will get the blog posts but I’ve never offered anything for sale.

      • ada shiela clarke

Not you offering items for sale, dear, but Electric Quilt Newsletters offering Amy Butler and EQ books etc. Sorry for confusion, I thought I was writing to EQ themselves.

Thanks for lovely quilt designs, I’m looking forwarding to making Grannie’s Hankies and Garden Party.

      • justquiltin

Ah – I’m got it now. Many of the EQ links to free patterns are just to people who design using EQ so they don’t have any affiliation other than sharing the links to many of the projects they include in the newsletters. Garden Party is a design of a dear friend of my, Sheryl Till, that she’s sharing. It’s a lovely one – she presented it previously on The Quilting Post, our online quiting group, and I have several blocks made from it that I’m going to make into a wallhanging rather than the full size quilt since when I moved I mistakenly gave away the scraps form the stash I was using to make that one. One of those DUH moments – tho my blocks that are done will make a lovely smaller project.

  127. Pam Spencer

I love your “Grannies Hankies” BOM. Can’t wait to receive Aprils.

    Regards
    Pam

  128. These are stunning blocks. I just found you, so will be starting with March. I am looking forward to making all the rest of them. Thank you for all your hard work and sharing your talents with us.

  129. ada shiela clarke

Your comments in red underneath the gorgeous red/pink quilt say “subsequent months will no longer be available” – forgive me for pointing this out but it should read “previous months” – I’m a former legal secretary and used to proof reading documents.

    • justquiltin

Thanks – I fixed it. I’m a legal assistant too – but it’s always easier to find someone else’s error in proofreading than your own. :-)

      • ada shiela clarke

I’m so glad you didn’t take offence Denise, but isn’t it amazing how little slip ups jump out at us, especially when in red LOL I appreciate your discipline working and producing at such a prolific rate for us – having worked all my life as single mum, routine was paramount. now retired I please myself and do what I like. Thanks again for your inspiration.

  130. Christine

Yippee!! Time for a new block.
I’ve been finishing them in 3 weeks and enjoying the feeling of being done the 4th week.
I’ve been really enjoying this project.

My smaller circles have been a bit wonky, but hopefully they’ll improve by the end. If I’m really ambitious I may redo the small circles on the last block at the very end. We’ll see.

I’ve learned to live and accept my imperfections and realize that it is part of the growing process.

  131. Jean Froelich

thank you so much for the beautiful patterns. I really look forward to getting them. I love the wall hangings too. I think I am going to leave them without borders for now in case I want to put them together. Just not sure yet. Than ks.
    Jean

  132. Glenicej

I have just found your blog and the Granny’s hankie BOM. I just love it,particularly the one on the black background. I will start to download from the April pattern but wonder how I can get hold of the earlier ones now.

    • justquiltin

Glad you like it. However as stated in the information for the BOM and in the sidebar of the blog, prior months’ patterns are no longer available.

  133. Claudeti Moschioni

Maravilhoso o seu trabalho. Obrigada pela generosidade em compartilhar sua arte com outras pessoas e por que não dizer, com o mundo!
    Parabéns!

  134. jan

Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful pattern, Denise. I marked the calendar for the second Saturday of each month. That way I can print the next pattern when it is ready, even if I haven’t completed the previous one. I get pretty excited when that Second Saturday rolls around.
    Thanks again!
    Jan

  135. what a wonderful quilt. i love your blocks and will download what i can from now on. thanks for sharing and have a great day

  136. alexis

Your Bom is very beautiful and I am really disappointed that I was not able to get the first three blocks. I know you said there was no reason to be able to get missed blocks so not to ask. I am not asking to get them I just want you to know that I read what you posted about sometimes life getting in the way.
Well, that is what happens to other people sometimes also. For instance the first of the year I had 3 strokes and they found a hole in my heart. Then I had to move during a blizzard, had other health problems including computer problems and was not able to use my computer until the first of April. So you can see, life gets in the way for others also. Thanks for reading.

    • justquiltin

Yes, I do realize life gets in the way for everyone at times. Hope your health problems improve.

  137. Charlotte Williams

Beautiful quilt and even though I missed the earlier blocks, I am starting now, :)

Have you thought abt selling blocks that are removed for those that missed the earlier ones??

Thx again for your time in providing these free blocks–

  138. Patricia

Just wondering when the May Block will be posted? I love this quilt and want to thank you very much for sharing it.

  139. Patricia

Thankyou, I got my Saturdays mixed up!

  140. piedad

I love your blocks. Thank you

  142. Melinda C in MI's UP

Because of a computer crash I missed some blocks and I do so hope that once this BOM is completed you will offer it for sale. I truly wish to purchase it because it is so lovely. Thank you for sharing your wonderful talents with us. Hugs – Melinda

    • justquiltin

Sorry Melinda – no I don’t sell any of my patterns. Just too much hassle involved in doing that which would cut into my quilting time. :-)

  143. Sandi

I found your site today and I’m so thrilled. I know I’m late but these blocks can be used for many things. Since I am late I will ‘create’ my own other blocks. So…it should be fun. Thanks for sharing your gifts.

  144. Melinda C in MI's UP

Denise, no problem at all – I can understand you’d rather be quilting!! ggg You do such beautiful work I thought it would be worth asking. I understand definitely about no sharing, and I may have read that you don’ sell your patterns, but I think my memory also went when my computer crash!! Sorry dear. Keep up the great work ;)

  145. me encnto este bom

  146. Hello,

If so, can you say to me how to make to have the blocks manquant.Merci in advance.
    So long
    In a friendly way

    • justquiltin

You can start collecting the monthly patterns any time but the prior month’s patterns are no longer available so you will need to substitute something else in their place.

  147. Hermien Dave

    Beautifull

  148. BJ Bullock

Wow ! I wish I had found this site earlier…I started collecting the monthly patterns in March. I am just delighted with the pattern….My quilt will have to be a bit smaller since I missed the first two blocks.

    • justquiltin

Glad you like it. You can always find other applique block patterns to subsitute in for the ones you missed.

  149. Chris Colavizza

Denise, I’ve just found your site and just started with the June Block. Would you mind if I drafted the other blocks based on the pictures on your website? Many thanks for your consideration.

    • justquiltin

Feel free to draft off the images for your own personal use.

  150. Dear Denise,
I began with the “Granny Hankie on the 24 of June and now I have done all seven blocks. Together with “Henrietta Whiskers” from Bunnyhill it´s my first hand-applique and I took batiks in all colors. I am happy I tried it and I´m looking forward to block Nr. 8.
    Many greetings from germany.

    • justquiltin

Sigrid – thank you for emailing the photos. I’ll get them added to the blog pages soon. They are lovely!

  151. Jackie Warren

I am a beginner quilter and love doing applique. My favorite in your color ideas is the cream? or yellow? with the greens. What color did you use for the background? I have been looking at fabrics but unable to make a selection as yet. Maybe you can help me decide. Thank you so much for the patterns. i am very anxious to get started on Granny’s Hankie. Jackie Warren

    • justquiltin

That’s just an EQ image of the quilt – I actually didn’t use those colors on mine but that version has a light tan background.

  152. beautiful quilt…wish I would have found it in January!! : (

  153. grammie24cuties

Hi, I have loved doing you bom and just now downloaded (for the fourth time!) this month’s block…however, I’m having a HUGE problem…the block measures 20″….all the other blocks were the perfect size but I just can’t seem to get this one to download to anything BUT 20″….I do get a message when I come to your page saying there is an error with the site “exception breakpoint”..what ever that means….any suggestions? (Other than taking the larger than life blocks to the library photocopier and reduce the size) Thanks

    • justquiltin

I don’t know why it’s printing the wrong size for you. I checked it before I loaded it and double checked it and it’s correct. An exception breakpoint is not a problem with the pdf file. My old computer was doing that when I was using an older version of internet explorer – when I updated it to the latest version it stopped the exception breakpoint errors.

  154. Michelle Sanderson

    Hi, Denise!
I’m sorry if this question has already been asked but I tried reading through all the previous posts and then I got tired and had to take a nap! Just kidding…really, just lazy. ;) Are you planning on posting instructions for the setting at the end of the program? You have done a beautiful job of designing and I really appreciate your work!

  155. I was also wondering about the September block – it comes out to a 20″ block. There are 7 pages as opposed to the usual 5 on the PDF. I don’t know how to change the size. I have updated my internet explorer.

    • justquiltin

The pdf is more pages because it is printing landscape rather than portrait. When I pdf’d the file I didn’t notice this was set at landscape until after I loaded the file and because I have to switch from the new computer to the old one to use the pdf program, it wasn’t worth the effort for me to take the time to jump back and forth between computers to fix it and then reload it again. If your block is printing at 20″ it is some setting on your computer that is affecting that. As with all blocks I post, I have a couple people who test print them, in addition to me, to make sure they are accessible and printing correctly. My only suggestion is to make sure that “fit to page” “shrink to fit” or any other “page scaling” is not turned on. Everyone’s computer/printer is setup differently so I can’t tell what the problem might be.

  156. Colleen

I found this as a link on the Thread Head blog post. I know it is a lot of work getting ready for these however this is October and I wish I would have found this last October. These block are simple enough for a beginner, me, yet pretty enough for all of the others.

    Keep up the super work.

  157. Great tip with the masking tape – I’ll have to try it out.

    • justquiltin

It works great. I have a roll of 1/4″ masking tape (found in the quilt supply section of the the fabric store) that I use. It helps so you don’t go cross-eyed trying to line up between those little markings. It’s also not as sticky as regular masking tape so peels off easily afterward and is great to use on a quilt top to mark straight lines to quilt since it doesn’t leave residue.

  158. Thank you for making this BOM. I have collected all the monthly patterns and i will definately make it. Just need to finish a few other projects. I still love it every bit as much as i did when i first saw it, if not more!

  159. The tape trick was fantastic (I have used it on another project already). I love how the quilt is coming together. Thanks.

    • justquiltin

Glad it worked for you – makes it so much easier for some of those odd measurements and keeps me from forgetting what I’m cutting if I have to stop and go back to the project later.

  160. Cleo

Wow – that is beautiful. Sure wish I had of found this earlier. Enjoy your day.
    Cleo

  161. Melanie

My computer died and I am not sure if I will be able to get certain folders off of it. The only one I am really concerned about is your quilt that I have consistently downloaded. I take great solace in that while I didn’t save it to a thumb drive, I did print each month out, so all is not lost. Thanks again for such a beautiful quilt.

    • justquiltin

Glad you had it printed but sorry about the computer problems. I so hate them and it takes forever to get things back to normal whether its fixing the old one or getting a new one.

  162. Cleo

I found your site in time for the last pattern, and will watch in case you have the rest for sale. This was an awesome quilt, and am looking forward to the next adventure.
    Thank you
    Cleo

  163. Marilyn McCorry

Just tried to download the November block and the coverpage but got a “404 file not found” message.

  164. I cant get the Nov. file. I just wrote you a mail. I tried it severall times. Please can you look after it??

    greeting Guilitta

    • I emailed you back. That error message is a WordPress error. There’s nothing I can do about it. The files are always tested when they are loaded and since this one has been downloaded over 800 times I know it’s working. :-) I just clicked on it right now and it popped right open. Please try again later.

  165. Sue

Great quilt, Denise! Thank you so much!
    Sue

  166. GeeGee

i get the “404 file not found” message also. Will try again later.

  167. Jennifer Padden

    Denise,
Thank you so much for this BOM. I managed to download all of the installments and work on some of them as I sat in the hospital with my sweet mother in law. Unfortunately, she passed away at the end of November, but she loved to see each pretty flower block as I worked on them. This quilt will always hold a special place in my heart because it will always remind me of Catharine. Thanks again and I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and Blessed New Year.

  168. Sue

Thanks Denise for this beautiful BOM. I have saved all the files and will work on them as time allows. Another year of lots of *stuff* going on here…2012 will be better! I appreciate all the neat things you so generously share with us. Thank you again!

  169. Michelle Sanderson

I appreciate your work on this lovely BOM! Aare you going to create one for 2012? Hope you have a wonderful Christmas ~ God bless you!

    • justquiltin

Thanks Michelle – yes there will be one – it will be a mystery. But I haven’t decided yet when it will start so you’ll have to check back.

  170. Anita

Thank you so much for sharing such a wonderful BOM with us!
    Greetings, Anita

  171. Bev Bishop

Thank you so much for this lovely Granny’s Hankie set of BOMs. I am looking forward to tackling this quilt right after Christmas. Best wishes to you and your family this holiday season!

  172. Thank-you so much for this wonderful creation! It was such a fun BOM and I am so pleased with the results.♥

  173. Jean Froelich

Hi Denise, Thank you so much for the beautiful Granny’s Hankie patterns. I was able to get all the patterns, even the December one but not able to pull in the November one. I kept getting an error message. Have other people had that trouble too? I do love that border but if I cannot get that month, I will just have to leave that border off. Is there a way for me to try to figure it out. I got the correction for the month, but not the month.
I feel bad even mentioning this because you are so generous with your patterns. Just wondering if others had this problem.
    Thanks again,
    Jean

    • justquiltin

There were issues from time to time with wordpress on obtaining the file but others were persistent and able to get it. Sorry you were not able to.

  174. Elizabeth

Thank you so much for your time and work on this beautiful quilt pattern you shared with us!! I too like Jean Froelich was able to download all the blocks except November’s. Will have to try and wing that border or do something different :0(.
Again thank you so much for sharing!! Wishing you and your family a wonderful Holiday Season!!?……and will catch up with you in the New Year!!! Elizabeth

  175. BJ

I think the corrected November pattern is the complete pattern…Isn’t it?

    • justquiltin

Any corrections after the original pattern is made available are listed on the Errata Page. It depends on when you downloaded it since my first correction was still wrong. Check the errata page to make sure you have the final correction listed.

  176. Just discovered this site today. So wish I had seen it earlier. Love this BOM. Hope there will be one next year. This would have been perfect for a gift for my mom. Beautiful.

  177. Lynn

I have just found this block of the month and would love to have a go but can’t download any of it. Such a shame. Any chance of it being re listed or is the whole for sale?

    • justquiltin

It won’t be relisted on the blog. Eventually it may go to EQ Boutique for sale but there are other designs ahead of it in line for that.

  178. Hello I discovered this site today like Brenda, Im from Colombia Southamerica and I wait the BOM for the next year.Merry Chritsmas
